Affordability should not mean compromise

Good design should expand access, not reserve quality for the few who can afford it. A reflection on what real affordability means — in hardware, and in the products we build.

For years, tools that many designers consider standard remained out of reach. In Brazil, even a “good” laptop can feel like a luxury, and that reality shapes not only what people can buy, but also how they learn to work. It teaches early that affordability is not just about price; it is about access, continuity, and whether a tool can actually support work over time.

From necessity to habit

For much of an early design career, Windows laptops are often the practical choice. They are more affordable, more available, and frequently the only realistic option for someone building a career without access to premium hardware. Those machines are not perfect, but they are often the reason a career can begin at all. Without them, there are fewer chances to learn, practice, and take on the kind of work that helps a professional move forward.

Over time, that practical choice can become part of a mindset. Limitations start to feel normal. Workarounds become routine. Only later does it become clear how much those compromises may actually be costing in time, trust, and energy.

Mac vs. PC

The Mac vs. PC debate is often framed as a matter of taste, but it is also a question of design philosophy. Apple’s strength lies in the way it connects hardware, software, and user experience into a coherent whole. The result is usually polished, reliable, and pleasant to use.

At the same time, that level of consistency comes at a price that puts Apple products out of reach for many people, especially in markets where purchasing power is limited. In that sense, Apple does an impressive job of delivering quality, but not much to broaden access to it. Its ecosystem is refined, but it is also premium by design.

Windows takes a different path. Its openness creates more options and makes the platform more accessible across a wide range of budgets. That flexibility matters, especially in places where affordability is not an abstract concern but a daily constraint. The downside is fragmentation: different brands, different product lines, and very different levels of quality under similar specifications.

When cost-benefit fails

In 2018, a Dell Inspiron 7000 series laptop looked like the perfect balance on paper: Full HD display, SSD, 16GB of RAM, an i7 processor, dedicated graphics, and an aluminum finish. For the Brazilian market, it felt like a rare opportunity to get something powerful without paying premium-brand prices.

But the reality was disappointing. The machine had serious thermal issues. Its processor and graphics card generated more heat than the single internal fan could handle, so the system throttled performance to stay within safe temperatures. The result was a laptop that looked powerful in the specifications but could not sustain that power in practice.

The fan also became noisy, and even after a replacement, the problem returned later. On top of that, static sounds began to appear during video calls, likely coming from the motherboard. What should have been a smart purchase became a source of frustration. More importantly, it damaged trust — not only in that model, but in the idea that a well-known brand automatically means dependable design.

You do not owe users detective work

People often say that cheap products come with compromises, and that is true. But that does not mean users should be responsible for uncovering those compromises on their own. When companies market products with high-end components, it is reasonable to expect those components to work well together in real use.

The problem is not affordability itself. The problem is when cost-cutting happens in areas that are hard for buyers to evaluate: thermal design, shielding, component quality, or long-term reliability. Those choices are invisible at the time of purchase, but they shape the experience that follows.

That is why “you get what you pay for” is only partly true. Often, people do pay for more than they receive — but they only discover that after the product has already failed to meet their needs.

Designing real affordability

If affordability is a goal, it should be treated as part of the design challenge, not as an excuse to lower standards. A truly affordable product is not simply one with a lower price tag. It is one that remains useful, reliable, and trustworthy over time.

In product design, that means focusing on the fundamentals:

Affordability and quality do not have to be opposites. But making them work together requires discipline, better trade-offs, and a willingness to design for people who cannot afford to buy twice.


Good design should expand access, not reserve quality for the few who can pay for it. Real affordability is not just about reaching a lower price point. It is about building products that people can depend on without feeling punished for choosing them.

That is why affordability should be seen as a design responsibility. Not the cheapest possible product, but the one that gives people the best chance to do their work well.
